One of the leading causes of pregnancy-related maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality worldwide continues to be hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). In addition to the usual risks for cardiovascular disease, affected women have an elevated risk of developing the condition later in life. Blood pressure is the amount of force your blood exerts when it is being pumped through your arteries. When this pressure against your artery walls is too great, you have high blood pressure, often known as hypertension. Pregnancy-related elevated blood pressure can take several different forms. Up to 10% of pregnancies are complicated by hypertension, the most frequent medical issue during pregnancy. The National High Blood Pressure Education Program Working Group on High Blood Pressure in Pregnancy recommends categorising hypertensive diseases during pregnancy into 4 groups. Pregnancy-related hypertension (high blood pressure) requires close observation.
